A while back I posted my ever evolving and probably never to be completed Not-So-Bucket-List list.  The list was based on an idea that I pilfered from one Dr. Beth who had apparently pilfered it from our friend Dave who pilfered it from someone else.  The specific idea behind the Not-So-Bucket-List was to write down a set of 101 activities/experiences/events that I wanted to complete within 1001 days. Being list-philic, I immediately jumped on the idea. Being a giant nerd, I allowed my list to grow beyond 101 items; I mean, there are just too many things that I want to do.

Anyway, over time I was constantly referring to my list but hated that I had to search for it. To remedy this first world problem, I decided to create a page specifically devoted to my list. Think of the countless seconds I will save.

  1. That’s right, I’m looking through the list (cool list and blog by the way). I couldn’t help but notice #84-86 – the ones on sit-ups. If I may be so bold as to politely discourage working up to them. To put it mildly: sit-ups are one of the worst things you can do to your back. I only offer this advice because of the many boring books and articles that I’ve read on the subject.     It’s kind of funny but not doing sit-ups has become a bit of a passion of mine and I only offer my two cents with the best of intentions. And performing #85 or #86 as a once only is probably just fine. It’s the training for them that’s the real kicker. Anyway, I’ve gone on long enough. Again, great list and best of luck with it.

    • Good to know. I actually find that the plank pose, or sprinting gives me a far better ab work out and minus the associated low back discomfort (is the plank pose safe for the lower back?). My yoga practice also includes a lot of back strength training, which has significantly improved my ability to do core work without back pain. But I’ll definitely be cautious about them :D

  2. The plank is great. And so are the side bridge, glute bridge, bird dog, and 1-legged crunch. But really, anything that keeps your low back in a neutral position and avoids forceful flexion/extension/rotation is good. Sounds like you have a good program in place.
