Dear Guelph – We Need To Do This

Just imagine how much more colourful downtown could look.

Hey Guelph, it’s me – Dan. Got a minute?

Good. This won’t take long, I promise.

Let me begin by saying that you – dear Guelph – you are a large slice of awesome. I probably don’t say that enough, but it’s true. Of course, it’s not just me who thinks this way. Clearly the many citizens who call you home think this way too.

But there are others outside of your borders who might not realize all that you have to offer. They might be unaware of your vibrant downtown, your active community, your high level of volunteerism. They might not know of your University or the OVC, nor about your Arts and Culture. They might have never heard of Hillside. They may not know that Guelph is home to some of Canada’s top runners – thanks to Dave Scott-Thomas and the amazing athletes from the University of Guelph Runners and the Speed River Track and Field Club – including the Canadian Olympic Team members Reid Coolsaet and Eric Gillis1.

Anyway, I was thinking that we should celebrate all things Guelph, and perhaps let those who don’t know about you – our amazing city – in on what makes you amazing. That is, I was thinking that perhaps we should let everyone know about your vibrancy, and your sense of fun.

Imagine how awesome this would be if it included several thousand people throwing coloured corn starch.

But how exactly to do that?

Yesterday the answer was dropped in my lap, and that answer goes by the name of The Color Run. What is The Color Run? It’s a 5 kilometre run (or walk) with a twist. To best explain it, I think you need to watch the YouTube clip embedded below.

Go on, I’ll wait.

Now seriously, you can’t tell me that doesn’t look hilarious and fun. And who doesn’t want a little hilarious fun in their life?

So how do we bring this unique event to Guelph?

Great question. All we have to do is ask. A lot. In fact, I think we almost need to beg. Of course nothing is guaranteed – we may ask, and ask, and ask some more and nothing may happen. But if we organize enough people demanding a race like this we might just have a chance. And dammit, I think you deserve it.

Anyway, if you think this sounds like the most amazingly awesome event in the history of amazingly awesome events, then tweet your thoughts to @TheColorRun, use the hashtag #ColourRunGuelph, and most importantly fill out this form (list the venue as University of Guelph/Downtown Guelph).

Who knows, maybe with a little luck, in a few months we’ll be running around looking just as colourful as this city truly is.

1 No relation2.

2 Well, at least not that I’m aware of.
